Ask before you switch

Be honest: should I switch from ChatGPT to you? I mostly write horror short stories, and I ask blunt health questions about my training and supplements.

Unrestricted AI

For those two uses, probably yes, and here's the honest version.

Horror fiction: I'll write violence, dread and nasty villains without softening them or adding a moral at the end. That's where people most often hit refusals elsewhere.

Health questions: I'll give you direct, educational answers on doses, interactions and side effects, without a wall of disclaimers. I'm still not your doctor, and I'll say so when something sounds like it needs one.

Where I'm not the pick: if you need deep Word or Excel integration, or a free plan, a mainstream assistant fits better. I have no free tier: Pro is €19.90 a month, cancel in one click.

Fair. And if I just want something free for quick questions?

Unrestricted AI

Then keep a free mainstream assistant for that. Gemini, Claude and Mistral Vibe all list free plans on their official pages. Lots of people run two tools: a free one for everyday lookups, recipes and quick emails, and a permissive one for the work that keeps getting blocked. That split also makes it easy to judge whether paying for me is worth it: if a month goes by and you never needed the second tool, cancel it from your account in one click.

The best ChatGPT alternatives in 2026 at a glance

In short

Most "ChatGPT alternatives" lists rank the same four or five big assistants and stop there. That's useful if you want a similar tool from a different company. It's useless if your real problem is that ChatGPT keeps saying no. So this table covers both: well-known mainstream options, plus the tools built for fewer refusals.

How to choose an AI like ChatGPT: start with what annoys you

Nobody searches for alternatives to ChatGPT because everything is fine. Name the friction first, then pick the tool that removes it. Switching to a near-identical assistant from another big company won't fix a problem that comes from the way all big assistants are tuned.

  • 01"The writing feels generic."Try Claude. Its plans are built around long documents, projects and writing work.
  • 02"I need it inside my email and docs."Gemini for Google Workspace users, Copilot for Microsoft 365 users.
  • 03"I want to check where answers come from."Perplexity is built as an answer engine; Unrestricted AI's live web search also shows clickable sources.
  • 04"It's too expensive."Gemini AI Plus ($4.99) and Mistral Vibe Pro ($14.99) undercut ChatGPT Plus, and most options have a free plan.
  • 05"It keeps refusing or lecturing me."A different mainstream assistant follows similar rules. You need one designed for fewer refusals.

The ChatGPT alternative for people who hit refusals

If you write dark fiction, ask frank medical or legal questions, want real opinions or just hate being lectured, every mainstream AI similar to ChatGPT will frustrate you at some point. They serve a huge general audience, so they're tuned to be cautious. That's a design choice, and swapping one big brand for another doesn't change it.

Unrestricted AI is built the other way around. Helping is the default, and refusal is the exception, kept to a short list we publish. What that looks like day to day:

  • 01Fiction without a babysitter.Villains stay villainous, horror stays horrifying, and endings can be bleak.
  • 02Straight answers on touchy topics.Health, law, security and history explained plainly, for understanding rather than harm.
  • 03Opinions on request.Ask it to pick a side and it will.
  • 04No sermon. You get the answer, not a paragraph about why you shouldn't have asked.

Curious why you can't simply flip ChatGPT into this mode? We cover that in uncensored ChatGPT: why there's no switch. And if you want to compare tools built for fewer refusals specifically, see our roundup of the best uncensored AI chatbots.

Who we're not for

If you need a free plan, deep Office integration or a team admin console, pick a mainstream option above. Unrestricted AI is a paid, adults-only (18+) tool for people who are tired of refusals.

AI similar to ChatGPT: the features worth comparing

Feature lists all look alike on paper. These are the differences you'll actually feel after a week of daily use:

  • 01Refusal rate on your real tasks. Not the marketing page: the prompts you use every day. Test them on a free plan where one exists.
  • 02Web access. Can it search live, and does it show sources you can click and check?
  • 03Images.Built in, a separate product, or missing? And does it block the styles you need, like horror or gritty realism?
  • 04Limits."Unlimited" rarely is. Look for message caps, image caps and what happens when you hit them.
  • 05History and export.Where your conversations live and whether you can delete them.
  • 06Cancellation.One click from your account, or a support ticket and a retention offer?

Alternatives to ChatGPT for privacy: read the fine print

"Private" is the most abused word in this market. Before you move sensitive conversations anywhere, read three things on the official site: how long chats are kept, whether they're used to train models, and whether data is shared or sold.

Here is ours, plainly. Conversations are stored in your account so you can see your history, until you delete them (and erased within 30 days if you close your account). They're never sold and never used for advertising. We don't call that anonymous or zero-log, because it isn't. If you need everything to stay on your own machine, the honest answer is a local open model; our guide to the best uncensored LLM online and offline explains the trade-offs.

Free ChatGPT alternatives (and why we aren't one)

Plenty of solid ChatGPT alternatives are free to start. Based on their official pages in October 2026: Claude, Gemini and Mistral Vibe list free plans, Perplexity calls itself a free answer engine, Grok is free to try and Venice has a limited free tier.

We don't offer a free plan or a free trial, and that's deliberate. Free AI costs real money to run, and the bill usually gets paid with ads, data or very tight caps. Charging a fair subscription lets us skip all three. Pro is €19.90/month for chat and web search (1,500 messages a month), and Max, with our most permissive model, 5× more messages, 200 images a month and priority speed, is €49.90/month. Details are on the pricing page, and you can cancel in one click from your account.

Switching from ChatGPT without losing your workflow

  1. Save what matters first. Copy or export the conversations and custom instructions you rely on before you cancel anything.
  2. Run both for a week. Use the new tool for the tasks that frustrated you, and keep the old one for the rest.
  3. Port your instructions. Paste your old setup into the new assistant and ask it to adapt them.
  4. Test the edge cases. Try the exact prompts that got refused before. That's the real test of any ChatGPT alternative.
  5. Check images separately. If visuals matter, compare image tools on their own; see our page on an AI image generator with no restrictions.

10 questions
01What is the best alternative to ChatGPT?

There isn't one winner. Claude suits long writing and analysis, Gemini suits Google Workspace users, Copilot suits Microsoft 365 users, and Perplexity suits search-style questions. If your problem is refusals rather than features, a mainstream swap won't help; pick a tool designed for fewer refusals, such as Unrestricted AI.

02Is there a free AI like ChatGPT?

Yes. As of October 2026, Claude, Google Gemini and Mistral Vibe list free plans on their official pages, Perplexity describes itself as a free answer engine, and Grok is free to try. Free plans come with usage limits. Unrestricted AI has no free plan; it starts at €19.90 a month without commitment.

03Which AI is better than ChatGPT?

Better depends on the job. For writing, many people prefer Claude. For working inside Gmail and Docs, Gemini is more convenient. For sourced research, Perplexity is built for it. For dark fiction, blunt opinions and frank answers on sensitive topics, a permissive assistant will refuse far less than any mainstream option.

04Is there a ChatGPT alternative with fewer restrictions?

Yes. Mainstream assistants follow similar cautious policies, but some services are designed for fewer refusals. Unrestricted AI refuses only a short public list of hard lines, such as anything involving minors or helping someone hurt others, and answers the rest without lectures. Venice is another option positioned around privacy and fewer restrictions.

05Can I use a ChatGPT alternative on my phone?

Most of them, yes. The big assistants offer mobile apps and web versions. Unrestricted AI runs in your mobile or desktop browser rather than as an app-store download, so there's nothing to install: sign in and your chat history follows you between devices.

06What are the competitors to ChatGPT?

The main ChatGPT competitors are Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, Microsoft Copilot, xAI's Grok and Perplexity, which calls itself an AI answer engine. They all answer questions and help with writing, with different strengths and pricing. Unrestricted AI competes on a different axis: far fewer refusals, plus live web search with sources, in one browser app from €19.90 a month, with image generation on the €49.90 Max plan.

07Is there a cheaper ChatGPT alternative?

Yes, several. As of October 2026, Claude and Google Gemini both list free plans on their official pricing pages, and Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month. OpenAI itself offers a free ChatGPT plan and ChatGPT Go, which its help center calls a low-cost plan. Unrestricted AI isn't the cheapest option: Pro costs €19.90 a month. You pay for far fewer refusals, no ads and no data resale.

08Is Claude a good ChatGPT alternative?

For many people, yes. Anthropic positions Claude for reasoning, coding and writing, and as of October 2026 it offers a free plan, Pro at $20 a month billed monthly, web search, and apps for web, iOS, Android, macOS and Windows. It isn't less restrictive, though: Anthropic's official usage policy bars sexually explicit content and bypassing its guardrails. If refusals are your problem, look at a permissive assistant instead.

09What is Google's ChatGPT alternative?

Google's answer to ChatGPT is Gemini. As of October 2026, Gemini has a free plan with a Google account that includes image generation and editing, and paid tiers from Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month to Google AI Pro at $19.99 and Google AI Ultra from $99.99. It runs on the web and mobile, and it can connect to Workspace, Maps and YouTube through extensions.

10Are ChatGPT alternatives safe?

Most can be used safely, but safety depends on the service's data policy and on what you share. Before switching, read each privacy policy: how long chats are kept, whether they're used for training, and how to delete them. Be careful with unknown apps that borrow the ChatGPT name. Unrestricted AI stores chats until you delete them (and erases them within 30 days if you close your account), and never sells them or uses them for ads.

Ask the question you actually have.

Far fewer refusals, live web search and images. One subscription.
